Hong Kong based illustrator Peony Yip is so young (only 21!), but her creative approach and vivid imagination show powerful backgrounds. We talked with Peony about her first steps, art tools and inspiration. Don’t miss a chance to get to know Peony a little bit closer:)

L: What animals as a symbol mean for you?

PY: Animals symbolizes the humanity that the world lacks. They are mostly my inspiration.

L: Can you tell us about your start in illustration world?

PY: I’m not exactly sure when it started or exactly how, but I drew whenever I could to improve my skills and I still do now but while I’m at it, why not do something a bit more interesting right?

L: What tools/techniques do you use to create your awesome art?

PY: I do both traditional and digital artworks but mostly traditional. I usually use graphite, watercolors and pencil crayons, nothing fancy. My techniques? I can’t really explain, I guess it’s quite straight forward. Sketch out the outline then fill in the details with graphite first follow by coloring.

L: Where do you like to shop for inspiration?

PY: Blogs are always a good place, but recently I found my inspiration in toys and my doodles on post-it memos. I don’t know, inspiration comes from all sorts of places :)

L: What does your daily agenda look like?

PY: Oh wow, quite dull actually. Wake up - Work - Go home - Sleep - Work again. Nothing interesting at all!

L: And our special question. Imagine that you are sweets, what kind it would be and why?:)

PY: I really liked this candy called “Red Hots” , it is a cinnamon flavored candy. They were absolutely addictive Haha! I guess I chose this because even though at times I can be friendly but rarely, I’m quite the hot tempered person I admit and I can stay angry for quite some time just like that sting in your mouth from eating “Red Hots”. Quite a silly explanation haha!

Thank you, Peony!
