We are going to brighten your day by welcoming Samantha Pierpoint with her beautiful feature at “My best work”!

I have produced three illustrated cube templates which will be printed onto separate boxes, each made to fit inside one another. I chose this plot because most of my work is based on landscapes and I wanted to really expand on this by creating a full-on planet where I could cover every type of landscape in one project.

What/who inspired you to create this work?

The concept behind this project was to create my own planet in three layers using patterns and landscapes to form an outer crust, the underground and the core. I just came up with the idea and was desperate to see what it looked like so I spent my evenings working hard building 3d paper landscapes, photoghrphing them then arranging and editing them on photoshop.

What were the main difficulties?

The illustration had to wrap round every edge of the cube which was a bit of a struggle, there was a lot of offsetting in photoshop towards the end of the project to make sure the images flowed correctly.

Thank you, Sam!

New piece in our special feature “My best work”. Welcome Mariana Rodrigues!

‘Orchids’ was inspired by my mother. I chose this work because of the emotional attachment I have with it. Orchids are her favorite flower, swallows her favorite bird. They make up for the center theme of this work.
This illustration also has some Japanese inspiration, which is also a central theme in my latest work. Japanese art and motifs is a place I always go for inspiration. It’s absolutely fantastic.
The biggest challenge of this illustration was the printing process. Up until now I never made such a big illustration (100x70cm). I was, naturally, worried about how the printing would go regarding colors and sharpness. A computer screen is a very different medium than paper, especially when the quality and thickness of the paper is such a big variable on how colors will be in the end.
Seeing the paper coming out of the printer was a magnificent moment. It was perfect.

My work features symmetrical intricate patterns and organic forms crossed with sharp geometrical elements, making obvious the details that don’t usually meet the eye in nature. It can be as simple as overlapping orchids and finding out other flower shapes. That’s simply amazing for me. It’s my way of trying to understand how mother nature works, how it is so perfectly beautiful.

Thank you, Mariana!
